VATICAN NEWS
: Pope Francis calls for a ceasefire in the Holy Land

Pope Francis has called for a ceasefire in the Holy Land. Addressing the faithful gathered in St Peter's Square for his Sunday Angelus, the Holy Father invited everyone to "continue to pray ... for the serious situation in Palestine and Israel". In particular, he asked that humanitarian aid be allowed to enter Gaza and that all hostages be freed.

The situation in Gaza has intensified over the last few days. Over 7,200 people are confirmed dead since 7 October, after Hamas carried out a deadly attack on Israel, which responded with bombardments and a ground invasion.

"Let there be a ceasefire", urged the Pope. "War is always a defeat - always, always".

"May no one abandon the possibility that the weapons might be silenced."

ALETEIA: Beg God for peace with Pope’s prayer to Mary (full text)

Mary, look at us! We stand here before you. You are our Mother, and you know our struggles and our hurts. Queen of Peace, you suffer with us and for us, as you see so many of your children suffering from the conflicts and wars that are tearing our world apart.

This is a dark hour. This is a dark hour, Mother. In this dark hour, we look to you, and in the light of your countenance we entrust ourselves and our problems to your maternal Heart, which knows our anxieties and fears. How great was your concern when there was no place for Jesus at the inn! How great was your fear when you fled in haste to Egypt because Herod sought to kill him! How great was your anguish before you found him in the Temple! Yet, Mother, amid those trials, you showed your strength, you acted boldly: you trusted in God and responded to concern with tender care, to fear with love, to anguish with acceptance. Mother, you did not step back, but at decisive moments you always took initiative: with haste you visited Elizabeth; at the wedding feast of Cana you prompted Jesus’ first miracle; in the Upper Room you kept the disciples united. And when, on Calvary, a sword pierced your heart, Mother, by your humility and strength you kept alive the hope of Easter through the night of sorrow.

Now, Mother, once more take the initiative for us, in these times rent by conflicts and laid waste by the fire of arms. Turn your eyes of mercy towards our human family, which has strayed from the path of peace, preferred Cain to Abel and lost the ability to see each other as brothers and sisters dwelling in a common home. Intercede for our world, in such turmoil and great danger. Teach us to cherish and care for life – each and every human life! – and to repudiate the folly of war, which sows death and eliminates the future.

Mary, how many times have you come, urging prayer and repentance. Yet, caught up in our own needs and distracted by the things of this world, we have turned a deaf ear to your appeal. In your love for us, you never abandon us, Mother. Lead us by the hand. Lead us by the hand and bring us to conversion; help us once again to put God first. Help us to preserve unity in the Church and to be artisans of communion in our world. Make us realize once more the importance of the role we play; strengthen our sense of responsibility for the cause of peace as men and women called to pray, worship, intercede and make reparation for the whole human race.

By ourselves, Mother, we cannot succeed; without your Son, we can do nothing. But you bring us back to Jesus, who is our Peace. Therefore, Mother of God and our Mother, we come before you and we seek refuge in your Immaculate Heart. Mother of mercy, we appeal for mercy! Queen of Peace, we appeal for peace! Touch the hearts of those imprisoned by hatred; convert those who fuel and foment conflict. Dry the tears of children – at this hour, so many are weeping! – be present to those who are elderly and alone; strengthen the wounded and the sick; protect those forced to leave their lands and their loved ones; console the crestfallen; awaken new hope.

To you we entrust and consecrate our lives and every fibre of our being, all that we possess and all that we are, forever. To you we consecrate the Church, so that in her witness to the love of Jesus before the world, she may be a sign of harmony and an instrument of peace. To you we consecrate our world, to you we consecrate especially those countries and regions at war.

Your faithful people call you the dawn of salvation; Mother, grant that glimmers of light may illumine the dark night of conflict. Dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit, inspire the leaders of nations to seek paths of peace. Queen of all peoples, reconcile your children, seduced by evil, blinded by power and hate. You, who are close to all, shorten our distances. You, who have compassion on everyone, teach us to care for one another. You, who reveal the Lord’s tender love, make us witnesses of his consolation and peace. Mother, Queen of Peace, pour forth into our hearts God’s gift of harmony. Amen.

62. Abraham, who was a disciple of Agatho, once asked Poemen, 'Why do the demons attack me?' Poemen said to him, 'Is it the demons who attack you? It is not the demons who attack me. When we follow our self-will then our wills seem like demons and it is they who urge us to obey them. If you want to know the kind of people with whom the demons fight, it is Moses and those like him.'

(Php 4:6-7) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

CARDINAL PIZZABALLA, Jerusalem’s Latin patriarch: Letter to the entire diocese

The whole world views this Holy Land of ours as a place that is a constant cause of wars and divisions. That is precisely why it was good that a few days ago, the whole world joined us with a day of prayer and fasting for peace. It was a beautiful view of the Holy Land and an important moment of unity with our Church. And that view is still there. On October 27th, the Pope has called for a second day of prayer and fasting, so that our intercession may continue. It will be a day that we will celebrate with conviction. It is perhaps the main thing we Christians can do at this time: pray, do penance, intercede. For this, we thank the Holy Father from the bottom of our hearts.

INSIDE THE VATICAN: Letter #149, 2023, Thursday, October 26: Sorrentino

Italian Bishop Domenico Sorrentino, 75, the bishop of Assisi, Italy (link) — the city of the great saint of peace, St. Francis (1181-1226) — has just expressed a desire to offer his own freedom in exchange for the freedom of the more than 200 Jewish hostages taken prisoner in Gaza by the Hamas organization on October 7.

ACN: Fear and faith in the Holy Land

Despite Israel’s recommendation that residents of northern Gaza evacuate, Sister Nabila Saleh, a member of the Sisters of the Holy Rosary and ACN’s local project partner, says that she is not going anywhere. “We need medicine. Hospitals have been destroyed. Our school has also been damaged, but we’re not leaving. People have nothing, not even the essentials. Where would we go? To die in the street? There are old and disabled people here. Where can they go? We will stay with them. Pray for us and for this madness to end,” she told ACN.

Sister Nabila has not slept for days, and the news that between 100 and 300 people died in the parking lot of an Anglican hospital on October 17th caused her deep suffering. Plus, the sisters’ school is in a neighborhood that was destroyed by airstrikes.

An Israeli invasion of Gaza is one of the major fears of Christians in the region: because of what that would mean for civilians in Gaza, and Hamas’ possible reaction. The group claims to have 5,000 rockets, and even though 85 percent of them have been intercepted by radars and protection systems, the rest are enough to do terrible damage to the Israeli population, including in Jerusalem.

VATICAN NEWS: Gaza’s parish priest: Christians in Gaza will unite with Pope in prayer

The Holy Family Catholic Church has been turned into a sort of hope-filled refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, as over 700 people seek shelter in the parish amid constant bombings.

“After the bombing four days ago that involved the Greek Orthodox church in Gaza, causing 18 deaths, many more Christian refugees have arrived in our parish,” according to the parish priest, Fr. Gabriel Romanelli, in an interview with Vatican News.

He pointed out that there are also “54 children assisted by Mother Teresa’s nuns, and many of them require special care since they have physical difficulties.” People of various religious beliefs are hosted in the parish, which has become the nerve center of the Church in Gaza.

The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, has provided the precise coordinates of the church to the Israeli authorities to prevent an accidental airstrike hitting them.

“All the nuns,” explained Fr. Romanelli, “have decided to stay in the Holy Family parish to be with the refugees.” They are aware of the risks they face, he added, “because there is no safe place. The Israeli army has repeatedly asked us to leave the northern part of the Gaza Strip, saying we should go south, but that is also bombed.” Fr. Romanelli claimed that the parish has now become like the community of the early disciples of Jesus.

“We do everything together,” he said. “We pray and try to live in charity by sharing what we have.” He said the community’s most urgent need is prayer. “We need to pray and ask for prayers, offering sacrifices to end the war. And then, certainly, basic necessities because there is truly a shortage of everything.”

And behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns and on his heads seven diadems. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered: that, when she should be delivered, he might devour her son. MEDIA REPORT: Jerusalem cardinal announces re-consecration of Holy Land to Mary amid Israel-Hamas war

As the war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas continues to escalate, Jerusalem’s Latin patriarch Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa has announced that the Holy Land would be re-consecrated to the 'Queen of Palestine', a Marian title popular among the faithful in the Holy Land.

Every year, the Sunday after October 25 is celebrated as the solemnity of the 'Queen of Palestine.' "We are approaching the solemnity of the Queen of Palestine, the patroness of our diocese... In these days we will once again reconsecrate our Church and our land to the Queen of Palestine!," the cardinal said in a statement released on Tuesday. Cardinal Pizzaballa lamented that “The whole world views this Holy Land of ours as a place that is a constant cause of wars and divisions.” He said that in this context, the recently observed day of prayer and fasting, in which the whole world participated, “was a beautiful view of the Holy Land and an important moment of unity with our Church.” Stating that his “conscience and moral duty” requires him “to state clearly that what happened on October 7th in southern Israel is in no way permissible and we cannot but condemn it,” the cardinal added, “The same conscience, however, with a great burden on my heart, leads me to state with equal clarity today that this new cycle of violence has brought to Gaza over five thousand deaths, including many women and children, tens of thousands of wounded, neighborhoods razed to the ground, lack of medicine, lack of water and of basic necessities for over two million people. These are tragedies that cannot be understood and which we have a duty to denounce and condemn unreservedly.”

Cardinal Pizzaballa warned that the continuing bomb attacks would “only cause more death and destruction and will only increase hatred and resentment.” The cardinal called for an end to the war calling it “senseless violence.” He remembered the 18 Christians who were killed in an airstrike in the compound of Saint Porphyrius church in Gaza last week, along with their grieving families. “The suffering of the innocent before God has a precious and redemptive value because it is united with the redemptive suffering of Christ. May their suffering bring peace ever closer!” he added.

Cardinal Pizzaballa made headlines a few days ago after he expressed his willingness to offer himself in exchange for Israeli children who had been taken hostage by Hamas and were held in Gaza, during a video conference with journalists in Italy.

VATICAN NEWS: Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem: ‘My heart is saddened for suffering brothers’

After 18 Christians were killed in last week's bombing of the Orthodox Church of St. Porphyrios in Gaza, Patriarch Theophilos III recalls the duty of Christians to “be peacemakers and seek justice” in an interview with the Osservatore Romano.

A special prayer for peace was held on Sunday morning at the "Catholicos" of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

The celebration, presided over by the Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III, was also attended by the Apostolic Nuncio to Israel, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana, and the Custos of the Holy Land, Father Francesco Patton.

At the end of the ceremony, Patriarch Theophilos granted the following interview to the Osservatore Romano.

Q: What is the situation of the Christians who survived the horrible tragedy of the bombing of your church in Gaza?

The tragic bombing of our church in Gaza has left a profound impact on the Christian community in Gaza and the rest of the Holy Land.

The survivors of this horrific bombing are resilient and filled with the spirit of Christ. They have displayed faith through the aftermath of this horrific ordeal. We have come together as a community to support one another, praying for healing and strength in the face of adversity.

As faithful Christians, we are called to be peacemakers and to seek justice. Our response to this war crime should serve as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the transformative power of faith and the capacity of the human spirit to rise above the darkness of war.

Q: Which initiatives are you taking to protect and to support them?

In these trying times, it is our sacred duty to extend our hand in support and protection to our Christian brethren and all those affected by the tragedy in Gaza. T he Christian community, through the Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, are working tirelessly to provide humanitarian aid and relief to those who have suffered the most. Our charitable organizations are collaborating with local partners to ensure that essential needs such as food, shelter, and medical care are met to the best of our ability given the Israeli decision to cut off water, electricity, food and medicine since 7 October.

Through prayer, advocacy, and practical support, we are resolute in our mission to protect and support those affected by this tragedy, following the teachings of Christ who calls us to be instruments of peace and agents of healing in a world in need of love and compassion.

Q: What is the sentiment among your people in Palestine and Israel? The sentiment among our Christian communities is one of hope, resilience, and a deep commitment to our faith. While the region has faced complex and challenging circumstances, our Christian brothers and sisters remain steadfast in their determination to live out the teachings of Christ.

In this diverse and often contentious land, we continue to promote peace, and coexistence. We actively participate in interfaith dialogues and collaborative efforts, striving to build bridges among people of different backgrounds and beliefs. Our communities serve as living witnesses to the message of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation that is at the core of Christianity.

At the same time, we cannot deny the difficulties and hardships that many in the region face, especially those living under the horrors of air strikes and artillery bombings in Gaza.

Ultimately, our message is one of unwavering faith, commitment to peace, and the belief that, as Christians, we are called to be peacemakers in this land, embodying the hope for a brighter and more harmonious future for all its inhabitants. We continue to pray and work for peace, justice, and the well-being of every soul in this sacred and troubled region.

ASIANEWS.IT: Churches in the Holy Land continue to offer shelter in Gaza, calling for an “immediate ceasefire''

COMMENTARY: If Israel’s army is sent into Gaza, Hamas will keep it there, and Israel risks being overrun by Hezbollah, Syria, and Iraq and Iran should they care to participate. Faced with Israel’s defeat, Washington would commit its forces with catastrophic consequences.

We are experiencing on the part of Israel and the US a total lack of judgment. The risks are being ignored. It is starting to look like the Armageddon that Revelation describes.

The problem for humanity is that it has developed weapons that are capable of destroying all life, and these weapons are in the hands of emotional people incapable of restraint and reason.

I have been, and continue to be, concerned about the conflict in Ukraine spiraling out of control. The situation developing in the Middle East is more dangerous. There doesn’t seem to be sufficient recognition of this danger. The war propaganda from the presstitutes is extreme and blinds people to reality. Those in office think they are in control, but they are not.

Possibly Russia could prevent a wider conflict by raising its military presence in Syria, but Putin is not proactive.

You tell me, where are the leaders to prevent a catastrophe?

: War in Israel, Parolin returns to the center of Vatican diplomacy

While the crisis in the Middle East flares up after the massacre at the Anglican hospital of al-Ahli in Gaza, the Holy See tries not to lose its compass by following a double path: that of prayer for peace and of the appeals to the international community addressed by the Pope, and the diplomatic one entrusted to Cardinal Pietro Parolin. Who repeated an almost forgotten concept in these days of war: that is, that the basis for the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must pass through the "two peoples, two states" formula and that we must start again from there if we want to build peace between the two peoples.

World War

On the other hand, this time the Vatican cannot be wrong: at stake is the future of the Holy Land where the Christian communities have been profoundly affected by the flight of many families due to conflicts, religious extremism, poverty and lack of prospects for younger people. And then the new conflict seems to prefigure the scenario evoked several times in recent years by Pope Francis of a third world war fought piecemeal. That is, on various fronts that could, sooner or later, come together. In a similar context, the Vatican Secretary of State Parolin has taken back the stage and now seems to lead the Vatican diplomacy which was partially confused after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

This time, in any case, the Vatican's position does not lend itself to misunderstanding. At the end of yesterday's general audience, Francis appealed to the international community to "do everything possible to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe" in Gaza where, he said, "the situation is desperate".

Then he added a dramatic reminder to believers: ĞLet the weapons be silent! Let the cry of peace of the people, of the people, of the children be heard! Brothers and sisters, war does not solve any problem, it only sows death and destruction, increases hatred and multiplies revenge. War erases the future. I exhort believers to take only one side in this conflict: that of peace; but not in words, with prayer, with total dedication." For next October 27, the Pope has announced a day of prayer and fasting for peace.

CARDINAL PIZZABALLA, Jerusalem’s Latin patriarch: “The hatred, which we have unfortunately already been experiencing for too long, will increase even more, and the ensuing spiral of violence will create more destruction. Everything seems to speak of death".

The Desert Fathers: sayings of the Early Christian Monks: Discretion

57. Poemen also said, 'If a thought about your bodily needs comes to you, and you put it aside; and then it comes again, and you put it aside, what will happen? If it comes a third time, you will not notice it, and it will do you no harm.'

NEWSMAX: Cardinal Offers Himself for Children Held by Hamas

Pope Francis' representative in the Holy Land said on Monday he was willing to exchange himself for Israeli children taken hostage by Hamas and held in Gaza.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, made his comment in response to a question during a video conference with journalists in Italy.

"I am ready for an exchange, anything, if this can lead to freedom, to bring the children home. No problem. There is total willingness on my part," he said.

"The first thing to do is to try to win the release of the hostages, otherwise there will be no way of stopping (an escalation). We are willing to help, even me personally," he said.

He stressed, however, that he and his office had not yet had any direct contact with Hamas, the militant Islamist group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,300 people.

"You can't talk to Hamas. It is very difficult," he said.

About 200 people were taken hostage and about a dozen of them are believed to be children.

Pizzaballa oversees Roman Catholic activities in Israel and the Palestinian territories as well as Jordan and Cyprus, a region which is home to an estimated 300,000 Roman Catholics.

MEDIALINE REPORT: Arab Israeli Paramedic Killed After Staying To Aid Festival Victims of Hamas Attack

Awad Darawshe, a 23-year-old Arab Israeli paramedic, was killed while treating injured attendees at the Tribe of Nova music festival in southern Israel, targeted by a brutal attack from Hamas terrorists. Darawshe worked for Yossi Ambulances and was on duty at the festival when rockets and grenades tore through the crowd, leaving around 270 Israelis dead.

Darawshe refused to evacuate when the extent of the Hamas attack became apparent, believing that he could mediate due to his Arabic language skills. He was shot to death while administering first aid. The Hamas assailants not only killed him but also stole his ambulance.

“He brought us a lot of pain, but also a lot of pride—because he chose to stay with his mission until the last moment,” said his cousin, Mohammad Darawshe.

Shachar Matias had used her body as a shield, a last great act of love towards her 16-year-old son, when Hamas gunmen broke into their home in Holit kibbutz.

Inside their safe room, with shooting just outside the door, she ordered her youngest child to get under a thick layer of fabric, then lay on top of him.

So he heard, but didn’t see, the attack that followed, an explosion he thinks was a grenade breaking open the door, another explosion and gunshots when the men were inside.

For a brief eternity, his father screamed in pain, he felt his mother’s body twitch above him, and then came a horrific silence, broken only by the gunmen laughing.

: Archbishop Aquila: Archdiocese prays for Israel and all innocent lives taken in Holy Land war

The Archdiocese of Denver prays for Israel, and all innocent people harmed in this ongoing war. Let us join the USCCB and the Latin Catholic patriarch of Jerusalem as they call for a day of prayer and fasting on Tuesday, October 17, for peace and reconciliation in the Holy Land.

Violence is not a religious act and cannot be claimed as Godly. As Hamas hides behind their atrocities, innocent men, women, and children are dying. This profound evil affects every corner of their homeland, touching all its people, including the Christian community in both Israel and Palestine. And in the wake of these attacks, politics must be put aside. Pope Francis says, “The Middle East does not need war, but peace, a peace built on justice, dialogue, and the courage of fraternity.”

So, let us humbly pray that the love and peace of Jesus comfort all who are living with the atrocities of the pure evil occurring. May his perpetual light shine within the hearts of those who are afraid, those who are grieving, and all those who still suffer from the wrath of unthinkable darkness that has plagued their lands. May all take comfort in knowing that God stands beside them through this, while our prayers are lifted up for a speedy end to all afflicted in this war.

And to our friends with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), as you stood with our faithful during times of great injustice, our hearts, sorrow, and pain are with you now and always.

There are fewer than 1,100 Catholics living in the Gaza Strip. That’s a drop in the bucket compared to the 2 million people packed into the small territory. The area along the Mediterranean is under siege and bombardment by the Israeli military, following the attack on Israel by Hamas last Saturday.

Holy Family parish of Gaza comes under the jurisdiction of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. In an interview on the LPJ website, Holy Family’s pastor, Fr. Gabriel Romanelli, said on Wednesday that some 200 parishioners are taking shelter in the church, monastery, St. Thomas Aquinas Center, Holy Family School, along with several congregations of women religious: Sisters of the Incarnate Word, the Rosary Sisters, and Sisters of Charity.

“Many of them are currently being welcomed by the Church, particularly the residents of the Rimal area, which has been subjected to violent bombardment,” said Fr. Romanelli, a missionary with the Institute of the Incarnate Word, a congregation established in his homeland, Argentina. “I was informed that four of our Christian families have lost their homes, destroyed by the war. They are currently staying in the church building.”

Fr. Romanelli told the unnamed interviewer that he is not currently at his parish, and is unable to get back to the Gaza Strip, although the assistant pastor, Fr. Joseph, is there. He addressed concerns about shortages of vital supplies, as Israel has cut off electricity, water, fuel, and medicines.

POPE FRANCIS: "I continue to follow with great sorrow what is happening in Israel and Palestine. I think again of the many … in particular of the children and the elderly. I renew my appeal for the freeing of the hostages and I strongly ask that children, the sick, the elderly, women, and all civilians not be made victims of the conflict. Humanitarian law is to be respected, especially in Gaza, where it is urgent and necessary to ensure humanitarian corridors and to come to the aid of the entire population. Brothers and sisters, already many have died. Please, let no more innocent blood be shed, neither in the Holy Land nor in Ukraine, nor in any other place! Enough! Wars are always a defeat, always!"

It is the right of those who are attacked to defend themselves, but I am very concerned about the total siege under which the Palestinians are living in Gaza, where there have also been many innocent victims.

Terrorism and extremism do not help reach a solution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, but fuel hatred, violence, revenge, and only cause each to other suffer. The Middle East does not need war, but peace, a peace built on dialogue and the courage of fraternity".

BBC: The smell of death is all around now in Gaza – doctor

Mahmoud Matar, the head of limb reconstruction surgery at a hospital in Gaza, is sending WhatsApp messages to the BBC, describing his situation as Israeli air bombardments continue.

“We are completely overwhelmed with the number of injuries and the number of dead,” he said.

“The dead bodies arrive in pieces. I am a surgeon and yet I cannot stomach the scene of death.” “Families here have seen their homes demolished over their heads, killing all but maybe one or two people, who come to the hospital with terrible injuries.

“We all feel disabled - we cannot help people."

He says at the moment he wishes he was not a doctor. "I cannot save my own family, my children are at home crying while I am on duty.” Mahmoud says the hospital’s operating theatre is running non-stop and the hospital beds are full.

By his count, more than 10 ambulance staff have been killed or injured and he personally knows a gynaecologist and urologist who have died.

“The smell of death is all around now in Gaza. There is no water, there will be no electricity, and we have very bad network connection. I am currently looking for water to drink.”

OPINION: From Dancing With the Torah to War in an Hour

SIMCHAT TORAH: A Wholesome “Rave” Party?

Simchat Torah concludes the sacred holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur where we search our souls, make amends, and return to our essence. Sukkat follows as we unite with each other in outdoor huts eating our meals there for eight days.

Then on Simcha Torah, we read the FINAL section of the Torah!!!

And we start celebrating and dancing??!! Not quite yet.

After the conclusion of reading the Torah for a whole year, without pause we go IMMEDIATELY BACK to the beginning of the whole book… back to GENESIS. Day one. Right there and then!

Simchat Torah means “The Joy of the Torah”. The festivities are expressed with singing, dancing and marching with the Torah as well as l’chaims for those that want to partake! It’s easy to forget amongst the festivities that we are actually celebrating the divine Five Books of Moses… the Torah. If we remind ourselves of our purpose, the joy is heightened.

Simchat Torah also represents repentance and forgiveness. Forty days after the Jewish people heard G-d’s voice at Mount Sinai, they built the Golden Calf. Seeing this idol worship, Moses breaks the The Ten Commandment tablets. But on Yom Kippur, Moses brings a SECOND set of Tablets from Hashem for the Israelites. G-d is always ready to forgive us for our wrong deeds when we repent and return. This chance to make right our wrongs and Hashem’s love for us is surely a cause for celebration.

: Hundreds Killed in Surprise Hamas Attacks on Israel; Netanyahu Says Country ‘at War’

Israel is “at war,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday after a series of surprise rocket attacks and incursions from Hamas killed dozens and saw the country being invaded on a major holiday.

The attacks, which were carried out on the observance of Simchat Torah, arose early on Saturday morning and had reportedly killed hundreds and wounded thousands more by late Saturday.

Netanyahu said on Twitter on Saturday that “since this morning, the State of Israel has been at war” and that the country’s “first objective is to clear out the hostile forces that infiltrated our territory and restore the security and quiet to the communities that have been attacked.”

“The second objective, at the same time, is to exact an immense price from the enemy, within the Gaza Strip as well,” he continued. “The third objective is to reinforce other fronts so that nobody should mistakenly join this war.”

“We are at war,” the prime minister added. “In war, one needs to be level-headed. I call on all citizens of Israel to unite in order to achieve our highest goal – victory in the war.” Dozens of videos flooded social media on Saturday appearing to show scenes of the missile attacks and the resulting chaos in Israel.

ANALYSIS: What You Need to Know About the Israel-Hamas Violence

CARDINAL PIERBATTISTA PIZZABALLA: Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem Statement

The cycle of violence that has killed numerous Palestinians and Israelis in the past months has exploded this morning, Saturday, October 7, 2023.

We assisted to a sudden explosion of violence that is very concerning due to its extension and intensity. The operation launched from Gaza and the reaction of the Israeli Army are bringing us back to the worst periods of our recent history. The too many causalities and tragedies, which both Palestinians and Israeli families have to deal with, will create more hatred and division, and will destroy more and more any perspective of stability.

We call on the international community, the religious leaders in the region and in the world, to make every effort in helping to de-escalate the situation, restore calm and work to guarantee the fundamental rights of people in the region.

Unilateral declarations surrounding the status of religious sites and laces of worship rattle religious sentiment and fuel even more Katred and extremism. It is therefore important to preserve the Status Quo in all the Holy Places in the Holy Land and in Jerusalem in particular.

The continuing bloodshed and declarations of war remind us once again of the urgent need to find a lastin and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian - Israeli conflict in Gis land, which is called to be a land of justice, peace and reconciliation among peoples. We ask God to inspire world leaders in their intervention for the implementation of peace and concord so that Jerusalem may be a house of prayer for all peoples.

CNS: Pope addresses fears around synod: 'Not a political gathering'

Pope Francis said the primary task of the synod is to "refocus our gaze on God, to be a church that looks mercifully at humanity, a church that is united and fraternal -- or at least tries to be united and fraternal."

The pope acknowledged that some people have fears about the synod, but he asked them to remember that it is "not a political gathering, but a convocation in the Spirit; not a polarized parliament, but a place of grace and communion."

"The Holy Spirit often shatters our expectations to create something new that surpasses our predictions and negativity," he said.

Through "synodal dialogue," the pope said, "we can grow in unity and friendship with the Lord in order to look at today's challenges with his gaze," becoming a church "which does not impose burdens" and is "open to everyone, everyone, everyone."

"The blessing and welcoming gaze of Jesus prevents us from falling into some dangerous temptations: of being a rigid church -- a customs office -- which arms itself against the world and looks backward; of being a lukewarm church which surrenders to the fashions of the world; of being a tired church, turned in on itself," he said.

We declare that no one is permitted to introduce, or to describe, or to compare, or to study, or otherwise to teach another faith. Whoever presumes to introduce or teach or pass on another creed . . . or whoever presumes to introduce a novel doctrine . . . We declare to be anathematized. (Pope St. Agatho the Wonderworker)

Under no circumstances can we conceive of the possibility of change, of evolution, or of any modification in matters of faith. The Creed remains always the same. (Pope Paul VI)

From the time the Christian religion began to be spread, she has held unchangeable and taught uncorrupted throughout the world the doctrines which she has received once and for all from her patron and founder, Saint Peter. (Pope St. Nicholas the Great)

The proposition that the principal articles of the Apostles' Creed did not have the same meaning for the Christians of the earliest times as they have for Christians of our time is hereby condemned and proscribed as erroneous. (Pope St. Pius X)

“Those wretches tainted with the error of Indifferentism and Modernism hold that dogmatic truth is not absolute, but relative: that is, that it must adapt itself to the varying necessities of the times and the varying dispositions of souls, since it is not contained in an unchangeable revelation, but is, by its very nature, meant to accommodate itself to the life of man.” (Pius XI)

“The preaching of the faith has lost nothing of its relevance in our times. The Church has a sacred duty to proclaim it without any whittling-down, just as Christ revealed it & no consideration of time or circumstance can lessen the strictness of this obligation.” (Pope Pius XII)

ALETEIA: Why did Archangel Michael take special care of St. Faustina?

EXCERPT: HOMILY OF THE HOLY FATHER MASS IN ST PETER'S SQUARE FOR THE CANONIZATION OF SR MARY FAUSTINA KOWALSKA Sunday, 30 April 2000

Sr Faustina Kowalska wrote in her Diary: "I feel tremendous pain when I see the sufferings of my neighbours. All my neighbours' sufferings reverberate in my own heart; I carry their anguish in my heart in such a way that it even physically destroys me. I would like all their sorrows to fall upon me, in order to relieve my neighbour" (Diary, p. 365). This is the degree of compassion to which love leads, when it takes the love of God as its measure!

It is this love which must inspire humanity today, if it is to face the crisis of the meaning of life, the challenges of the most diverse needs and, especially, the duty to defend the dignity of every human person. Thus the message of divine mercy is also implicitly a message about the value of every human being. Each person is precious in God's eyes; Christ gave his life for each one; to everyone the Father gives his Spirit and offers intimacy.

This consoling message is addressed above all to those who, afflicted by a particularly harsh trial or crushed by the weight of the sins they committed, have lost all confidence in life and are tempted to give in to despair. To them the gentle face of Christ is offered; those rays from his heart touch them and shine upon them, warm them, show them the way and fill them with hope. How many souls have been consoled by the prayer "Jesus, I trust in you", which Providence intimated through Sr Faustina! This simple act of abandonment to Jesus dispels the thickest clouds and lets a ray of light penetrate every life. Jezu, ufam tobie.

UNIVERSALIS: From the diary of St Faustina

The mission of proclaiming and begging divine mercy for the world

O my God, I am conscious of my mission in the Holy Church. It is my constant endeavour to plead for mercy for the world. I unite myself closely with Jesus and stand before him as an atoning sacrifice on behalf of the world. God will refuse me nothing when I entreat him with the voice of his Son. My sacrifice is nothing in itself, but when I join it to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, it becomes all-powerful and has the power to appease divine wrath. God loves us in his Son; the painful Passion of the Son of God constantly turns aside the wrath of God.

O God, how I desire that souls come to know you and to see that you have created them because of your unfathomable love. O my Creator and Lord, I feel that I am going to remove the veil of heaven so that earth will not doubt your goodness.

Make of me, Jesus, a pure and agreeable offering before the face of your Father. Jesus, transform me, miserable and sinful as I am, into your own self (for you can do all things), and give me to your eternal Father. I want to become a sacrificial host before you, but an ordinary wafer to people. I want the fragrance of my sacrifice to be known to you alone. O eternal God, an unquenchable fire of supplication for your mercy burns within me. I know and understand that this is my task, here and in eternity. You yourself have told me to speak about this great mercy and about your goodness.

UNIVERSALIS: A letter from St Francis of Assisi to all the faithful

We must be simple, humble and pure

It was through his archangel, Saint Gabriel, that the Father above made known to the holy and glorious Virgin Mary that the worthy, holy and glorious Word of the Father would come from heaven and take from her womb the real flesh of our human frailty. Though he was wealthy beyond reckoning, he still willingly chose to be poor with his blessed mother. And shortly before his passion he celebrated the Passover with his disciples. Then he prayed to his Father saying: Father, if it be possible, let this cup be taken from me.

Nevertheless, he reposed his will in the will of his Father. The Father willed that his blessed and glorious Son, whom he gave to us and who was born for us, should through his own blood offer himself as a sacrificial victim on the altar of the cross. This was to be done not for himself through whom all things were made, but for our sins. It was intended to leave us an example of how to follow in his footsteps. And he desires all of us to be saved through him, and to receive him with pure heart and chaste body.

O how happy and blessed are those who love the Lord and do as the Lord himself said in the gospel: You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart and your whole soul; and your neighbour as yourself. Therefore, let us love God and adore him with pure heart and mind. This is his particular desire when he says: True worshippers adore the Father in spirit and truth. For all who adore him must do so in the spirit of truth. Let us also direct to him our praises and prayers saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, since we must always pray and never grow slack.

Furthermore, let us produce worthy fruits of penance. Let us also love our neighbours as ourselves. Let us have charity and humility. Let us give alms because these cleanse our souls from the stains of sin. Men lose all the material things they leave behind them in this world, but they carry with them the reward of their charity and the alms they give. For these they will receive from the Lord the reward and recompense they deserve. We must not be wise and prudent according to the flesh. Rather we must be simple, humble and pure. We should never desire to be over others. Instead, we ought to be servants who are submissive to every human being for God’s sake. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on all who live in this way and persevere in it to the end. He will permanently dwell in them. They will be the Father’s children who do his work. They are the spouses, brothers and mothers of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Desert Fathers: sayings of the Early Christian Monks: Discretion

48. Poemen said, 'If a man sins and denies it, saying, 'I have not sinned," do not correct him, or you will destroy any intention he might have of changing. If you say, "do not be cast down, my brother, but be careful about that in the future," you will move his heart to repent.'
